Dario Vitale Stepping Down from Role at Versace After Less Than Nine Months
When Dario Vitale showed his first Versace collection in September, the brand seemed headed in an exciting new direction. After nearly 30 years under Donatella Versace’s leadership, Vitale appeared ready to bring fresh energy to the fashion house. His bold, ’80s-inspired debut was well received, with GQ’s Samuel Hine even asking, “Am I a Versace Guy Now?” in his glowing review. Only a few months later, however, Versace is facing more change. The brand was acquired by the Prada Group, and Vitale has already stepped down from his role. He officially joined Versace in April, just one month after Donatella Versace stepped away as creative director. At 70, she left behind a lasting legacy, having guided the brand since the death of her brother, founder Gianni Versace, in 1997. Her vision helped define Versace as bold, glamorous, and fearless. Vitale’s appointment last spring marked the end of a major era. As only the third creative director since the brand’s founding in 1978, he brought strong experience from his 15 years at Miu Miu, where he rose to design and image director. While the reasons for his departure remain unclear, the biggest disappointment is for loyal Versace fans. Vitale’s first collection has not yet reached stores, and under new ownership, it may never be released—leaving many to wonder what direction the brand could have taken under his leadership.
